While the Golden State Warriors maintain some level of optimism that they are capable of putting together a trade package for Giannis Antetokounmpo that the Milwaukee Bucks are prepared to accept, sources say there is some doubt on whether he would be amenable to the move.
Antetokounmpo may not be as eager to join the Warriors at this point as he was believed to be in the past. The Warriors surely have an aging roster with Stephen Curry turning 38 in March, plus he has observed the criticism Kevin Durant received for joining the team.
Antetokounmpo undoubtedly is prioritizing the chance to win another title, but he also is balancing that with the narrative of his career. If Antetokounmpo were to help the New York Knicks win their first title in more than 50 years, that would create a special and unique story. As would joining forces with Anthony Edwards to bring a title to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
As the Warriors build a trade package around future draft capital of their own to send to the Bucks, the risk of the move becomes exponentially greater if they move forward without clear assurances that Antetokounmpo sees the Warriors as a long-term fit.
Antetokounmpo is represented by Alex Saratsis and Jeff Austin with the latter also being Curry’s agent.
