Nets Officially on Giannis Watch

April 30, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

The Nets could trade for Giannis.

The Milwaukee Bucks’ playoff loss to the Indiana Pacers has ignited fresh trade speculation about Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Brooklyn Nets have tracked Antetokounmpo’s situation for months. Now, as the Bucks face a potential rebuild, the Nets’ pursuit of Giannis gains momentum.

Nets Officially on Giannis Watch

The Nets ended the 2024-2025 season with a 26-56 record, missing the playoffs for the second straight year. The team has entered a rebuilding phase, hoping to secure a valuable draft pick. They hold 31 draft picks over seven seasons and significant salary cap space. Trade rumors continue around center Nic Claxton. The team must also decide whether to re-sign guards D’Angelo Russell and Cam Thomas

Despite having extensive draft assets, the Nets must decide whether to develop young talent or trade for a superstar. Since December, Antetokounmpo has been on their radar due to Milwaukee’s uncertain future, salary cap issues, and an aging roster.

Giannis’ Future With the Bucks

The Bucks’ Tuesday night elimination raises major questions about their future. Damian Lillard will likely miss the 2025-2026 season with an Achilles injury. Brook Lopez is set to enter free agency, and head coach Doc Rivers’ future remains uncertain.

Antetokounmpo, 30, dominated the 2024-2025 season, averaging 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game. His three-year, $175 million contract extension begins next season. ESPN’s Shams Charania and Jamal Collier reported that the Bucks will meet with him to discuss his future. Not having Lillard next season could heavily influence Antetokounmpo’s decision. Lillard is owed $112 million over two seasons and holds a 2026-2027 player option at age 36.

Nets’ Pursuit of Giannis

In January, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported that the Nets would pursue a superstar player. According to New York Post writer Brian Lewis, “Giannis Antetokounmpo has been and remains Plan A for the Nets.” Other teams, including the Spurs, Rockets, and Thunder, could also enter the mix. Still, the Nets seem ready to make the boldest move. Despite his new contract, the Nets hold an advantage over any NBA team. They can absorb Antetokounmpo’s salary and outbid rivals in trade offers.

Opportunity to Build a Championship Contender

Antetokounmpo, a two-time MVP, dominates on both ends of the court. He has spent 12 seasons with the Bucks and led them to a championship in 2021. He won Defensive Player of the Year and Finals MVP, proving his all-around dominance. Since Milwaukee is no longer a contender, he will likely seek a new team.

At the press conference after the Bucks’ loss to the Pacers, Antetokounmpo refused to discuss his future with the team. He was disappointed and expressed frustration that their season ended. “I’m not gonna do this,” He said. “I know how this is gonna — whatever I say I know it’s going to translate. I don’t know man. Antetokounmpo continued, “I wish I was still playing. I wish I was still competing and going back to Milwaukee. I don’t know.”

The Nets have a chance to pull off one of the most talked-about trades in NBA history by acquiring Antetokounmpo. They could build their future around him and instantly become a championship contender. New York fans would embrace him, electrifying the city’s basketball scene.
