Milwaukee Bucks center Brook Lopez will enter free agency this summer and must decide his future. With playoff-contending teams showing interest, a Brooklyn Nets and Lopez reunion seems unlikely.
Nets and 17-Year Veteran Center Reunion Unlikely
Several playoff teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, and New York Knicks, have struggled at the center position this year. This lack of depth and reliability in the paint has exposed defensive weaknesses and disrupted their offensive strategies, ultimately affecting their performances in critical matchups. As a result, these teams have struggled to compete against opponents with dominant big men, highlighting a key area that they may need to address in the offseason.
Meanwhile, the Bucks face uncertainty at the center position, with Lopez, 37, likely departing in free agency this offseason. Throughout his seven seasons with the team, the center played a crucial role in their success, helping secure an NBA championship and contributing to multiple playoff runs. His presence alongside stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard, and Khris Middleton provided veteran leadership and motivation, elevating the team’s overall performance. As Milwaukee prepares for the offseason, they must address the void left by Lopez and determine their next steps in strengthening their frontcourt.
Role Shift
Despite playing 80 games and averaging 13.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks this season, Lopez’s role shifted during the playoffs. Head coach Doc Rivers reduced his minutes in the first round against the Indiana Pacers.
NBA analyst Jake Weinbach reported that Lopez and the Bucks will likely part ways this summer. Teams seeking a center, such as the Lakers, Celtics, and Knicks, may pursue Lopez as they look to strengthen their frontcourt.

Lopez’s Legacy In Brooklyn
The Nets drafted Lopez 10th overall in 2008, and he played nine seasons for the team. During that time, he earned All-Star recognition and became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer. Additionally, he was a fan favorite. In 2017, they traded Lopez and the draft rights to Kyle Kuzma (the 27th pick) to the Lakers. In return, they received D’Angelo Russell and Timofey Mozgov. After one season with Los Angeles, Lopez signed with Milwaukee.
A Nets and Lopez reunion seems unlikely. But had he returned, he could have provided the young roster with a respected veteran presence and championship experience, offering valuable mentorship and leadership. Lopez would have also strengthened the frontcourt and provided stability.
Decisions To Be Made
Recent reports indicate that Brooklyn is also passing on Golden State Warriors restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga. Although he remained on their radar, they appear to be moving on from him. The Nets aim to rebuild by strategically filling their roster. They hold four draft picks and must decide their selections. If Antetokounmpo requests a trade, they will likely pursue him. Additionally, they must weigh the options of trading Cameron Johnson and Nic Claxton or re-signing Cam Thomas.
For now, Nets fans will have to hold on to the memories of when Lopez played for the team and wait until his number is retired in the Barclays Center.
