Giannis and Dame’s Growing Chemistry Silences Trade Rumors

January 20, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

The Bucks have won six out of their last seven games as Giannis and Dame's chemistry is growing.

In early November, things looked bleak for the Milwaukee Bucks. The team stumbled out of the gate to a 2-8 start, sparking concerns about their chemistry and title aspirations. The whispers of discontent grew louder, with “Giannis Trade” searches on Google peaking at the beginning of November. Questions about Damian Lillard’s fit alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo were unavoidable, and the Bucks’ poor performances against Eastern Conference powerhouses like Boston and New York only fueled speculation.

Giannis and Dame’s Growing Chemistry Silences Trade Rumors

Fast forward to January, and the narrative has started to shift. Although the Bucks are still winless against the top teams in the east they have won six of their last seven games, showcasing the very chemistry fans dreamed of when the team traded for Lillard. What once felt like an awkward adjustment period has transformed into one of the league’s most dynamic partnerships.

The Turning Point

A key part of this turnaround has been the team’s renewed focus on starting strong. The Bucks have been the highest-scoring team in the first quarters over their last three games. As Giannis put it after the game against Toronto,

“When we come out and start games the right way with the right focus and the right energy…we impose our will on teams. This focus has set the tone early in games, allowing the Bucks to build momentum and confidence from the opening tip.”

When asked about his recent offensive surge, Lillard mentioned a conversation with assistant coach Vin Baker that helped him refocus. “He told me to just go and be Dame,” Lillard said. “That conversation kind of freed me.”

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Lillard has since been on a tear, averaging 26.2 points, 6.5 assists, and shooting over 53% from deep in his last six games. Meanwhile, Giannis has adjusted his game to complement Lillard’s playmaking. Their two-man game, built on pick-and-roll actions, has become the backbone of Milwaukee’s offense. Giannis thrives as a roll man, using his athleticism to punish defenses, while Lillard orchestrates at an elite level, ranking in the 87th percentile as a pick-and-roll ball handler.

Their synergy creates problems for defenses. In the recent wins over the Kings and Magic, Milwaukee forced opponents to “pick their poison.” Sell out to stop Giannis inside, and Lillard drills threes or finds open shooters. Overcommit to Lillard, and Giannis dominates the paint with easy finishes. Their chemistry has not only elevated their own play but it has also unlocked opportunities for their teammates.

Looking Through the Trade Noise: Giannis and Dame’s Path Forward

Despite a roller coaster of a season, the Bucks’ recent surge has started to reshape the narrative around their potential. Giannis and Dame’s growing chemistry, built on trust and adaptability, has not only propelled Milwaukee back into contention but also silenced the noise around trades involving Giannis or Dame and compatibility issues. However, the next step is proving they can consistently compete with other contenders.

If this trend continues, the Bucks will be a team no one wants to face in the postseason. For now, Milwaukee’s message is clear: this duo isn’t just working—it’s thriving.
