Doc Rivers on referees questionable foul call for LaMelo Ball: I thought the refs blew that final play

November 16, 2024 by Hoops Hype

“I thought the final play was the ref blowing a call,” Rivers said. “This is back-to-back games now where on the final play there has been an incorrect call made.” The Bucks did not have a challenge left. If they had, the call would have been overturned on replay, crew chief Curtis Blair said afterward.

Doc Rivers told reporters that final designations still needed to be made on the three injured players on the injury report. He made it seem like Giannis Antetokounmpo and AJ Green will probably play, while Bobby Portis’ status is still fully up in the air.

On Wednesday, with Lillard/Rollins out, Bucks coach Doc Rivers chose to play Delon Wright 27 minutes and then run the rest of the game without a point guard on the floor.
So, today, I asked, “Did that feel like a situation AJ Johnson is just not quite ready for yet?”

More on this storyline

The Bucks lost 115-114 to the Charlotte Hornets after a controversial foul call on Giannis Antetokounmpo sent Hornets star LaMelo Ball to the free-throw line with 7.3 seconds remaining. Though Ball appeared to trip over his own feet on a drive, Antetokounmpo was whistled for impeding Ball’s progress. Ball sunk the go-ahead free throws to give Charlotte the lead and eventually drop the Bucks to 4-9 on the season when Antetokounmpo missed a mid-range jumper on the Bucks’ final possession. “There was clearly not a foul,” Bucks coach Doc Rivers said. “When you watch the video, the ref was blocked out by one of our players. You can’t guess at the end of the game. Both teams have played too hard.” -via New York Times / November 16, 2024
