3 Injured In Shootings During Milwaukee Bucks NBA Title Celebration

July 21, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

General look at the Milwaukee Bucks stadium.

Two shootings were reported in downtown Milwaukee early Wednesday morning following the Bucks’ championship win at Fiserv Forum. Three people were injured, according to police.

Both shootings occurred around 12:42am near Water Street, across the Milwaukee River from where the Bucks had just won their first title in five decades. Crowds fled the area after hearing multiple gunshots.

Chaos ensued after the final buzzer in Milwaukee, where an estimated crowd of 65,000 had packed the Deer District plaza outside Fiserv Forum. The shootings took place in a highly populated neighborhood, per the Associated Press.

Concentrated crowds had become a safety issue even before the reported shootings. During Game 6 Tuesday, a police officer was trampled by people storming the Deer District once it had reached capacity. The officer was not seriously injured, according to Milwaukee Police Captain Jesús Ortiz.

Authorities continue to investigate the aforementioned shootings, one of which left a 22 year-old man with non-life-threatening injuries. One suspect is reportedly in custody.

A 19 year-old woman and 32 year-old man were injured in the other of the two shootings, which happened around the same time. The victims are in stable condition and someone is in custody. Police are also in pursuit of other suspects.

The shootings were audible on local TV station WISN, Ortiz said.

In anticipation of Tuesday’s pandemonium, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers called in 150 members of the National Guard to assist Milwaukee’s police force.
