Nationals Stall Brewers at Home, 4-1

Brewers Offense Muted in Loss

The Brewers looked out of gas in their first home game coming off an 8-2 road trip, a 4-1 loss to the Washington Nationals.

The Crew had little answer for LHP Patrick Corbin, who was quite good for the Nats. He gave up three hits and struck out seven across 6.1 innings.

Brett Anderson gave the Crew a fighting chance, inducing eleven groundball outs and striking out three. He looked sharp across the first three scoreless innings but seemed to lose both patience and focus during a mid-game apology from Stephen Colbert to the city of Milwaukee that stalled the fourth inning. After the bit, Anderson gave up two singles that came around to score on a 2-out triple by Lane Thomas to give the Nats a 2-0 lead.

Hunter Strickland came on in the sixth after Anderson walked two of the first three batters he faced. Strickland surrendered a hit, allowing one of Anderson’s runners to cross, which brought the Nationals to a 3-0 lead.

Daniel Norris was a bright spot on the mound, working primarily with an effective fastball-changeup combination to get through the seventh and eighth inning without much incident.

The only hit that would get the Crew on the board was Avisaíl García’s career-best 24th home run of the year, a solo shot in the seventh inning.

The Brewers looked like they could get something going in the bottom of the eighth when Lorenzo Cain worked a walk to begin the inning and Christian Yelich came to pinch hit for Manny Piña with nobody out. Instead, Yelich grounded into a double play on the first pitch he saw and Omar Narváez quickly grounded out behind him.

Jake Cousins struggled with command in the ninth and allowed his first earned run primarily on walks. He issued three in the inning, including an intentional walk to Juan Soto and an RBI walk to Josh Bell to bring the Nats up 4-1. The Brewers’ offense would stay quiet through the ninth to close out the game.

Hopefully, the Crew will rest off their jet lag to come back in the series, which continues tomorrow at 3:05 CT at American Family Field.
