Milwaukee Brewers Signs Veteran All-Star Jose Quintana

March 4, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to terms with 35-year-old free agent starter/veteran Jose Quintana. Quintana recorded a 10-10 record with an ERA of 3.75 with 135 strikeouts across 170.1 innings pitched in 2024. He pitched effectively in game three of the NLWC for the New York Mets last season. Quintana pitched six innings, allowing four hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Quintana is known for executing quality pitches while on the mound. In September 2024, Quintana secured his 100th career win, putting up 6 2/3 scoreless innings and six strikeouts against the Cincinnati Reds.

Brewers Sign Jose Quintana

The veteran will enter 2025 aiming for a championship in his 14th major league season. Quintana is a reliable, consistent, left-handed pitcher who performs well in high-leverage situations. Quintana has been a quality starter for the Mets on his two-year $26 million signing with the Mets before the 2023 season. Jose Quintana abided by his nature in 2024, contributing as a steady veteran presence in the rotation. In his last six games played, he recorded an ERA of 0.74. Quintana will provide the Brewers with an impressive fastball and curveball. In July of 2024, against the Minnesota Twins, Quintana threw 48 curveballs to smash the Twins with a final score of 15-5. Those 48 curve balls he threw were the second highest in his career. Showcasing his hustle, drive, and determination to dominate and compete.

As a starter, Quintana is also strong at providing ground-ball-inducing pitches by using his curve or sinker with solid command. This has fooled hitters, limiting them to hard contact. In 2024, Quintana sported a walk percentage of 8.8% and a ground ball percentage of 47.4 %. Quintana is not a strikeout type of pitcher but will his opponents out through weak contact/grounders. He also doesn’t give up a lot of home runs and is good at making adjustments with his pitches. Quintana will turn 36 on January 24th, making him one among many veteran and coveted starters, such as Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, looking to dish what they have left to offer in 2025.
