Milwaukee Brewers place Freddy Peralta on 10-day Injured List, recall Hoby Milner

Peralta left early with shoulder soreness during his most recent outing.

Freddy Peralta left his most recent start for the Milwaukee Brewers after pitching just three innings, and it was reported after the game that he had been dealing with some shoulder soreness in the days leading up to his outing. Despite Peralta’s initial optimism that he would be able to make his next scheduled start, the Brewers made the move to place him on the IL prior to yesterday’s series finale in St. Louis.

Peralta, 25, had fashioned himself into a legitimate Cy Young candidate this season prior to going down with this malady. He has been the hardest pitcher to hit in the big leagues this year — leading the league with just 4.7 H/9 allowed — while posting a 2.45 ERA and 2.98 FIP across 121.1 innings pitched. He’s struck out 12.2 batters per nine versus 3.8 BB/9 on the way to a 0.940 WHIP. The 2021 All-Star pitched only 29.1 innings during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, so the club is likely making a wise choice by playing it safe and protecting the young hurler’s body. Peralta thinks it should only be “10-11 days” before he’s ready to go again, but the Brewers have plenty of rotation depth right now with Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, Brett Anderson, Eric Lauer, Adrian Houser on the way to returning from a bout with COVID-19, and Alec Bettinger and Aaron Ashby down in Triple-A.

In the meantime, Hoby Milner returns for his 5th stint of the season with the big club. He tossed 1.2 scoreless innings last night against the Cardinals and owns a 4.40 ERA in 14.1 innings this season, with 19 strikeouts versus two walks.

Dan Vogelbach is also back in action on a new minor league rehab assignment, just a few days after a real rowdy foot injury cut his previous rehab assignment short on August 13th. During his first stint with the Sounds, Vogey hit .379/.548/.586 with two homers and 12 walks versus 7 strikeouts in 42 plate appearances. Following a six-day layoff, Big Dan welcomed himself back to Nashville’s lineup with a home run, single, and walk in three plate appearances last night versus Memphis. Conveniently, the Brewers will be able to extend Vogelbach’s latest rehab assignment into the month of September, which will give them the option of recalling him after rosters expand. Assuming he is healthy at that time, of course.
