Milwaukee looks to keep rolling against Kyle Freeland and the Rockies
Milwaukee comes into today’s series opener against the Rockies having won six of their last seven games. They have scored four or more runs in every single game since June 17. The Brewers are now nine games over .500 and just three games back of the Cubs in the NL Central.
Jose Quintana will get the ball for the Crew today. Quintana’s ERA is a sparkling 2.98 through 10 starts as a Brewer. The veteran left-hander has a surprisingly high ERA (5.40) in 10 career appearances against Colorado. However, this Rockies team has the worst record in the league by a good margin, so Quintana should be able to put together another solid start.
Colorado will tab left-hander Kyle Freeland. Freeland, a former first-round draft pick, hasn’t had an ERA under 4 since 2018. His stats don’t look great this year either (5.13 ERA, 1.53 WHIP), but — as with all Rockies pitchers — some of that might be a result of pitching half of his games at Coors Field. Freeland’s 3.63 FIP would actually be the best of his entire career. In his last start against Milwaukee, back in April, he gave up five runs in 6 1⁄3 innings.
As for the lineup, not a ton to write home about. Sal Frelick, Jackson Chourio, and Christian Yelich make up the top of the order again today. They’re followed by William Contreras (who got the day off Wednesday), the red-hot Isaac Collins, and Rhys Hoskins. Brice Turang slides down to the seven spot, followed by Caleb Durbin and Joey Ortiz. Turang, Durbin, and Ortiz are all hitting over .350 in the last seven games.
Today’s game will be broadcast live on FanDuel Sports Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network. First pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m.
