Brewers offense looks to get on track against Seth Lugo
The Milwaukee Brewers will look to bounce back from a disappointing loss tonight as they take on the Kansas City Royals in game two of their three-game series. On the hill for the Brewers will be Colin Rea, who will face off against one of this season’s early Cy Young contenders, Seth Lugo.
Lugo’s early success—he is 5-1 with a 1.60 ERA in 45 innings—is at least partially due to luck, as his FIP sits at 3.43 and opposing batters are hitting just .246 against him. Lugo, who is 34, has a long track record of being a “pretty good, below All-Star level” pitcher, so his numbers are likely to regress as the season goes along. The Brewers will hope that regression will begin tonight.
On the other side, Rea has had a season much like Lugo. Rea’s 4.78 FIP sits more than two runs higher than his 2.67 ERA, and his Statcast numbers, like Lugo’s, suggest that he is fortunate to have had the success he has had so far this season. That being said, Rea’s early success has been crucial in stabilizing a very much in flux Brewers rotation, and I’m sure the front office will not be complaining about the results he is getting.
I’m not going to say that Pat Murphy read my piece this morning, but Joey Ortiz is in there at third today against the right-handed Lugo (who, it must be said, has a slight reverse platoon split in his career). Rhys Hoskins will man first base with Tyler Black on DH duty, and they’ll roll with an outfield of Chourio, Perkins, and Frelick from left to right as they continue to await Christian Yelich’s return. William Contreras is back behind the plate after serving as the DH last night.
First pitch is at 6:40 pm on Bally Sports Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network.
