Woodruff served up a big inning in the fifth.
The Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals faced off for the series finale of their three-game set on Thursday, and with Brandon Woodruff on the mound, it seemed like the Brewers had a strong chance to complete the road sweep at Busch Stadium. For the second straight outing, the Brewers gave Woodruff strong run support, but for the second straight outing, he failed to capitalize on it.
St. Louis got on the board first in the opening frame, with Tommy Edman doubling to lead off then coming around to score on a Nolan Arenado double. The scoring then ceased until the middle innings. In the fourth, Milwaukee put up a crooked number against veteran lefty Jon Lester. It started with an Avisail Garcia hit by pitch. A groundout by Lorenzo Cain moved him up to second, then Luis Urias walked. Manny Pina doubled to score Garcia and move Urias up to third base, tying the game at 1-1. Woodruff popped up for out number two, but Kolten Wong singled to bring home two runners and push the score to 3-1. Following Wong, it was a Willy Adames double that brought KoWo to the plate and made it a 4-1 game.
St. Louis answered back with a big inning of their own in the fifth. Woodruff gave up a leadoff single to Andrew Knizer, but then retired the next two batters. However, Paul Goldschmidt kept things going with a two-out single. Then Arenado singled, driving in Knizer to make it 4-2. The next batter was Tyler O’Neill, and he lofted a hanging curveball out of the park to center field for a three-run jack to give St. Louis the 5-4 advantage. Lars Nootbar then got in on the action, following with a solo dinger of his own to make it 6-4.
St. Louis added a run off Brent Suter in the sixth thanks to an RBI double from Edman, and another in the seventh thanks to a bases loaded walk by Miguel Sanchez. Hoby Milner recorded the final five outs without incident, but the game ended with an 8-4 defeat. The Brewers put only one batter on base from the fifth inning on — an Avi Garcia walk in the fifth, which was erased by a double play. Cardinals’ pitching retired the final 13 batters in a row.
The Menomonee Valley Nine returns home on Friday to begin a series against the Washington Nationals. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM central, with left-hander Brett Anderson slated to face off against a yet-to-be-determined starting pitching for the Nats.
