Bryan Hudson Returns to Brewers’ Pen; DL Hall Headed Back To Triple-A

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers’ bullpen got a boost Monday when left-hander Bryan Hudson was reinstated from the 10-day injured list.

Hudson had been one of Milwaukee’s best relief options this season, going 4-1 with a 1.60 ERA in 35 appearances before landing on the IL on July 27 with a strained oblique.

“We’re happy to have him back,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said.

To make room for Hudson on the active roster, the Brewers optioned left-hander DL Hall to Triple-A Nashville. This comes just one day after returning from the IL and making his first big-league appearance since April.

The decision to option Hall has less to do with his performance Saturday than it does the fact that he is one of the few members of the Brewers’ pitching staff with minor-league options remaining.

“He threw the ball good and there were some good things there,” Murphy said. “There’s some room for improvement but he’s a young player with options.”

Hall was one of two players acquired when the Brewers dealt Corbin Burnes to the Orioles, and made just four starts. He went 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA, before landing on the IL with a left knee injury.

He went 0-1 with a 2.78 ERA during a minor league rehab assignment. That lasted 13 games, thanks to a string of unfortunate luck, before finally returning to the Brewers on Sunday. He struck out a career-high nine batters while allowing three runs on five hits and three walks over 4 2/3 innings in Milwaukee’s 4-3 loss to the Reds.

“I told him ‘it’s not about how good you are right now, it’s about you still have some development, and you haven’t been doing it all year, and you didn’t show that when you first started this year, injuries aside, so now you’re healthy and feel about good, so we’re going to see you again’,” Murphy said.

“Right now, this is what’s best for the club.”

Hall’s spot start Saturday came at the midway point of 13 games in 13 days. Barring injury, he’ll need to spend 15 days in the minor leagues before he can be recalled.

Milwaukee could bring him back as its 27th player for a doubleheader against the Reds in Cincinnati on Aug. 30.
