Top Pitching Performance of the Week
The best individual pitching performance of the week belongs to Freddy Peralta, the staff ace, who threw six scoreless innings on Friday night in a game that the Brewers won 2-1 in extra innings. Peralta struck out seven, walked two, and allowed just four hits; he was cruising until there were two outs in the sixth, where he hit a snag but worked his way out of trouble.
A special shout out, however, must go to Bryan Hudson, who made two scoreless appearances this week. He didn’t allow a hit while recording seven outs in the Brewers’ bullpen-game shutout on Wednesday against the Padres, then pitched 2 1⁄3 more innings, these perfect with four strikeouts, on Sunday in another shutout, earning the win in relief. It was especially sweet for Hudson, who grew up in the St. Louis area and had a large contingent of fans on hand for the game. Hudson’s ERA on the season sits at 0.77 in 11 2⁄3 innings.
Top Hitting Performance of the Week
There wasn’t really a single batter who stood out over the last week. Instead, the offense—which finally slowed down a bit after a hot start—found success the way they have all season, which is getting contributions up and down the lineup. Blake Perkins and Willy Adames each hit .318 to lead the team in the last week, Jackson Chourio hit two homers (the only Brewer with more than one), Brice Turang led the squad with three stolen bases (and was second only to Adames with an .838 OPS), but I’ll go with William Contreras as the week’s top contributor; he continued to get timely hits with a team-high five RBI, including both run-scoring knocks in the Brewers’ 2-1, extra-inning victory on Friday night.
Injury Notes & Roster Moves
After missing a few games, Christian Yelich was officially placed on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday, retroactive to April 13. With Joey Wiemer already in the bigs, Yelich’s spot on the roster was given to Owen Miller (who had the game-winning hit on Sunday in his first start of the season).
DL Hall was placed on the 15-day injured list on Sunday with what the team is calling a left knee sprain, sustained while fielding a bunt on Saturday. It should be noted that Hall pitched two innings after the injury occurred, so it may not be serious, but the Brewers may also use this opportunity to try to figure out what exactly is hampering Hall’s fastball velocity. Jared Koenig, who had been optioned on Wednesday, was recalled to replace Hall on the active roster.
Trevor Megill was recalled from the 7-day concussion injured list on Friday (he’d been on the IL since April 3) and promptly threw 30 pitches in 1 2⁄3 innings that night.
Other quick notes: Tobias Myers was recalled from Triple-A Nashville but didn’t get into a game before being sent back down. Vladimir Gutierrez, who the Brewers claimed off waivers on April 5, was designated for assignment and traded to the Red Sox for cash. Jake Bauers was placed on the bereavement list on Friday and has been temporarily replaced on the roster by Andruw Monasterio. Kevin Herget, who was DFA’d on April 14, cleared waivers and was sent to Nashville.
On Deck
The Brewers are in the midst of a 13-day stretch with no scheduled off days. They’ll start their week with four games in Pittsburgh against a Pirates team that got off to a great start but who have lost six in a row to drop to 11-11 on the season. Over the weekend, they’ll have a home series against the New York Yankees, who at 15-7 are leading the AL East. (Get in as one of the first 30,000 fans on Saturday to grab a City Connect tumbler.)
