Brewers Place Their New First Baseman on IL With Hamstring Strain

May 15, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Brewers placed first baseman Rhys Hoskins on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a strained right hamstring.

Hoskins suffered the injury early in Milwaukee’s 8-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates Monday night, trying to turn the corner on a second-inning single. He was replaced by pinch-runner Blake Perkins and underwent an MRI exam Tuesday morning that confirmed the injury. Jake Bauers started in Hoskins’ place at first base in Tuesday night’s game, a 4-3 win.

“They don’t think it’s terribly bad but still it’s a hamstring strain so it’s going to take two, three, four weeks,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said after Milwaukee’s 4-3 victory over the Pirates Monday night. “We just have to see how it comes along.”

“I felt a little grab in the hamstring and I’ve learned over the years not to push soft tissue stuff like that,” Hoskins said Monday night.

Rhys Hoskins Heads to IL with Hamstring Strain

Still with the Philadelphia Phillies at the time, Hoskins missed all of last season after tearing his left anterior cruciate ligament during spring training. But needing to add some punch to a lineup that struggled to produce offense, Milwaukee took a chance and signed Hoskins to a two-year, $34 million contract in January.

He was off to a good start in his first season with the Brewers, slashing .233/.340/.474 with 9 homers, 27 RBI, and a .794 OPS in 38 games. Hoskins had been swinging an especially hot bat of late. In his last six games, he went 6-for-19 with three homers, nine RBI, and a 1.199 OPS.

“That’s a big blow,” Murphy said. “We lose one of our leaders.”

In a corresponding move, Milwaukee recalled Owen Miller from Triple-A Nashville to fill Hoskins’ spot on the active roster.
