Brewers Lose Star Pitcher for Wild Card Series

October 3, 2023 by Last Word On Baseball

Milwaukee Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff has been ruled out for the NL Wild Card series with a shoulder injury. It is unknown if he will be able to pitch later on in the postseason if the Brewers advance past the Wild Card series. He was scheduled to pitch Game Two against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday prior to being ruled out.

Craig Counsell announced Brandon Woodruff will not play in the wild card series and “his availability for the postseason is up in the air at this point” with a right shoulder capsular injury, per @Todd_Rosiak pic.twitter.com/oQkoHILFEi

Brandon Woodruff Ruled Out For Wild Card Series

Woodruff, 30, has been a vital piece of the pitching staff for the Brewers when healthy. Earlier in the season, he spent four months on the injured list. When he returned early in August, he looked as healthy as can be. In his nine starts since returning, he held a 2.59 ERA and collected five wins.

The two-time All-Star had an excellent season going overall. In total, he had 11 starts on the season. In those starts, he had a 2.28 ERA, 75 strikeouts, only 15 walks, and 17 earned runs. It is unknown whether he’ll be back later in the postseason. He has already had problems with his throwing shoulder this year and now has what’s being called a right shoulder capsular injury.

Pitching Rotation Changes

With Woodruff out for the entire Wild Card series, and possibly the rest of the postseason, the Brewers will have to figure out who’s going to fill his shoes. Woodruff and Corbin Burnes were one of the best duos in the league. They would’ve been an imposing duo for the Diamondbacks to have to see in Game One and Game Two. Now, it is assumed Freddy Peralta will be the starter for Game Two.

Wild Card Series

The Brewers were the division winners of the NL Central. They have been matched up with the Diamondbacks, as the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves each get a bye. With Woodruff out for the series, and potentially the entire postseason, it is a huge blow to the Brewers and their hopes of making a run in the postseason. Game One of the series is scheduled for tomorrow at 7:08 pm ET in Milwaukee.
