Brewers Catcher to Miss Time with Calf Strain Injury

June 27, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Gary Sanchez wasn’t in the lineup Tuesday against the Texas Rangers due to a calf strain. The veteran slugger has now been placed on the 10-day injured list with that injury, per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. Sanchez’s injury is considered a low-grade strain and he will be eligible to return on July 4 if he’s ready on that date. Eric Haase was called up from Triple-A Nashville who will be the No. 2 option at catcher behind William Contreras.

Aside from Sanchez on the IL, the Milwaukee Brewers have officially selected Dallas Keuchel‘s contract. Right-handed pitcher Joel Kuhnel has been designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

Gary Sánchez’s left calf is a low-grade strain but needs time, so he landed on the Brewers’ injured list. Eric Haase is up to be the backup catcher.

Sanchez enjoyed a resurgence in 2023 but signed with the Brewers in late February after an offseason of no offers. He signed with the San Francisco Giants in April before being released in May. Sanchez signed with the New York Mets but lasted only three games before being designated for assignment. The San Diego Padres claimed him off waivers and found more consistent playing time. Sanchez hit 19 home runs with a .792 OPS before a right wrist fracture ended his season in September.

This season has been the opposite for Sanchez. The two-time All-Star is hitting a lowly .218/.293/.401 with seven home runs and 18 RBI in 164 plate appearances. However, he’s striking out at a 28 percent clip over a 7.3 percent walk rate.

Keuchel Makes Season Debut

Keuchel, the 2015 American League Cy Young Award winner, was traded to the Brewers from the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday. Keuchel’s start today will be his 2024 debut against the Rangers. The left-hander was one of the more dominant pitchers for the Houston Astros from 20212-18. He signed a one-year deal with the Atlanta Braves in 2019 then a three-year deal with the Chicago White Sox in 2020 but was released the following season.

After brief stints with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Rangers in 2022, Keuchel signed a minor league deal with the Minnesota Twins in 2023. In six starts (10 appearances), he posted a 5.97 ERA in 37 2/3 innings. Keuchel went the offseason unsigned before signing a minor league deal with the Mariners in April.
